WASHINGTON — A local Mexican politician was hacked to death as he was giving an interview to a local journalist.
Reuters reported that Osbaldo Esquivel Lucatero was in his car and was giving an interview when gunmen came and pulled both him and the reporter out of the car.
Lucatero was then hacked to death in the streets near Apatzingan, which is located in the troubled state of Michoacan. Michoacan has seen a rise in drug gangs and crimes as of late. The reporter, Pablo Madriz, posted to his Facebook this week and said, “thanks to God, I’m doing very well.”
The media has been intimidated by the prevalence of drug gangs and lawlessness.
Media freedom in parts of Mexico has been hindered by the threat of retribution from violent drug gangs.
