Mexican drug cartel leader guilty of killing an American agent in 2011

WASHINGTON — The Mexican drug cartel leader known as “Tweety Bird” has pleaded guilty in U.S. federal court in Washington, D.C. to ordering a hit on two American immigration agents in 2011. Reuters reports [1] that the two Americans were ambushed by two hit squads from the Los Zetas drug cartel.

el piolin zetas [2]Zetas commander Julian Zapata Espinoza, known as “El Piolin” (or “Tweety Bird” in English), ordered the hit squads to run an armored American vehicle off the road and ordered the American agents, Jaime Zapata and Victor Avila, out of the car. When they refused, the squad opened fire on the car and killed Zapata and seriously injuring Avila.

Zapata pleaded guilty last Thursday, but had been extradited from Mexico in December 2011 and was indicted by a U.S. grand jury in April 2012. Three other cartel members were sentenced in activities related to Zapata’s.
