WASHINGTON — Western Maryland is trying a last-ditch, almost Hail-Mary effort to secede and break away from the state of Maryland.
Reuters reported that Scott Strzelcyk is heading the effort and calls the current political situation in Maryland a type of political slavery.
This is a long shot because it has not happened since the American Civil War.
Strzelcyk’s main point is how Western Marylanders are upset with high taxes and a severe political split between the conservative, rural areas of the region compared to the liberal, suburban and urban areas of the state.
Other regions across the United States are also floating similar proposals, such as conservatives in southern Oregon and northern California, liberals in Tucson, Arizona and conservatives in Colorado as well.
Gridlock between state legislators in addition to the U.S. Congress contributes to the proposed secession movements.
