WASHINGTON — Nurse Kaci Hickox, age 33, is defying orders by the state of Maine to remain in a 21-day quarantine. She has hired lawyers to fight a potential lockdown over the Ebola virus.
Reuters reported that Hickox, who has yet to be served a court order, has tested negative for the Ebola virus after she helped with treatment efforts in Sierra Leone.
The 21-day quarantine period, which spans the incubation period for the virus, is a common procedure after being in contact with Ebola patients. Hickox went on a bike ride with her boyfriend, passing by policemen stationed by her house.
Her lawyer said she will avoid contact with other people in the meantime, until the state and her lawyers come to an agreement on a solution.
