WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama said he will not issue a sweeping executive order favoring illegal immigrants and aliens, which enrage his Latino base of supporters.
Reuters reported Obama said he will not issue an order until after the upcoming midterm elections in November.
Hispanic lawmakers and activists blasted Obama’s reluctance to address the issue, with several saying he is playing politics. Obama had initially indicated that he would make a decision by the end of this summer. Democratic congressman Luis Gutierrez said, “Playing it safe might win an election…But it almost never leads to fairness, to justice and to good public policy that you can be proud of.”
Obama resisted an executive order because Senate Democrats are afraid of their November 2014 electoral prospects, which aren’t favorable by any measure. Most of the races of incumbents are contested by Republican candidates.
