WASHINGTON — Frank Lautenberg, New Jersey’s U.S. Senator and the Senate’s last surviving World War II veteran, has passed away at the age of 89. Reports coming from the nation’s capital confirms that Lautenberg passed away due to complications from viral pneumonia.

frank lautenbergLautenberg, a lifelong Democrat, served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps and after the war, attended Columbia University. His death marks the last surviving WWII veteran serving in politics today.

Republican governor Chris Christie now has the opportunity to appoint a successor, who will most likely be in office until the November 2014 elections. This may be an interesting race between Christie’s appointed senator and the social-media-savvy mayor Cory Booker.
