WASHINGTON — Italian power magnate Silvio Berlusconi has backed down from nearly toppling the Italian government, where he promised to support embattled Prime Minister Enrico Letta in a confidence vote.
Reuters reported that Berlusconi reversed his decision to push for Letta’s removal when several of his party members, the People of Freedom party, said they would support Letta.
But, this display showed Berlusconi’s political power even as he is facing a ban from serving in the Italian parliament. The Italian media mogul has no shortage of opponents or followers.
This comes at a time where the Italian economy is struggling and the government is trying to keep its finances under control.
