WASHINGTON — Looks like the “moderate” Iranian President Hassan Rouhani may not be as moderate.
Fox News reported that tens of thousands of protesters rallied outside the location of the former U.S. embassy in the capital city of Tehran, marking the anniversary of the 1979 hostage crisis.
Initial reports indicated that the protesters back Rouhani’s hard-line opposition, but Rouhani has not distinguished himself as a moderate other than through rhetoric (but not action). The rally sparked cries of “death of America” and were a part of an organized effort by the radical and powerful Revolutionary Guard.
The 1979 hostage crisis crippled the Jimmy Carter administration and led to his landslide loss at the hands of Ronald Reagan. 52 people were held hostage by Iranian Islamist radicals who stormed the embassy and lasted 444 days.
