WASHINGTON — So much for sanctions, it seems Iran is a lot smarter than the West gives them credit for.
Reuters reports that Iran is “exploiting a loophole” in the U.S. and European sanctions to buy high grade refined alumina ore from Europe.
The ore can be eventually used to make parts for armor and missile components. Iran is importing the ore from Germany, France, Slovenia, Italy, Belgium and Hungary and is imported in its raw form.
Iran is being sanctioned by the West for its nuclear program, which Iran says it is for peaceful purposes. But the West is wary of Iran’s intentions of building a viable nuclear program for developing nuclear weapons, in addition to its threats against the West and major Western ally Israel.
