WASHINGTON — A European Union police officer, part of the task force to integrate Kosovo into the state of Albania, was shot dead by unknown gunmen.
Reuters reported that the Lithuanian officer, part of the EULEX mission, was traveling from a shift at a border crossing between Serbia and Kosovo.
The EU negotiated a deal where Kosovo, which is mainly Albanian Muslim, is transitioning to an independent country. Also, Serbia agreed to allow the ethnic Serb minorities in northern Kosovo to be integrated into the new country of Kosovo.
However, the Serbs, who are an ethnic minority in Kosovo, fear an integration process considering that Serbs murdered Albanian Kosovars up to two decades ago.
Sadly, the Lithuanian officer was dead on arrival at a local hospital with chest and leg wounds. A Czech officer was also in the vehicle, but escaped harm.
