WASHINGTON — A gunman in a clown suit killed one of the top Mexican drug cartel leaders this weekend.
Reuters reported that the shooter, whose identity is unknown to the press for the time being, may have been tied to organized crime.
The victim, Francisco Rafael Arellano Felix, 63, was a former leader of the Tijuana cartel. He was shot in the head and was killed at a family gathering. The gathering took place in Baja California. In one of the most confusing statements (if taken out of context), was the state prosecutor, who said:
“A person dressed as a clown took his life”
The gunman fled the scene and the press said he had two accomplices in the murder.
Arellano Felix spent 15 years behind bars before extradition to the U.S. in 2006. He was paroled and was released back to Mexico in 2008.
