WASHINGTON — Former Arizona congresswoman, Gabrielle Giffords, went to New York to push for background checks at gun shows. She even toured a gun show while she was there and wanted to require background checks for buyers.
Reuters reported that Giffords and her husband, retired U.S. astronaut Mark Kelly, want background checks for buyers at gun shows to be adopted on a nationwide level.
In New York, it is “voluntary” that gun buyers go through the background checks at gun shows, at least that is what New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman would have you believe. It also does not help that the Reuters piece said Giffords and Kelly are “supporters of the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which protects the right to bear arms”.
Many Second Amendment advocates do not push for background checks for buyers at gun shows because law-abiding citizens attend these guns shows and not criminals, which background checks are designed to identify.
