GM recalls over 117,000 Vehicles over Electric Fuses

WASHINGTON — After scandals enveloped the American automaker, General Motors has preemptively acted on problems in their cars and have recalled 117,651 newer vehicles in North America.

GM assembly line [1]Reuters reported [2] that the problems are a manufacturing defect that could lead to an electrical short, which could cause a crash. Only 1% of all the recalled vehicles are believed to have the defect, but are taking no risks.

GM had tried to cover up some issues with other cars in the past, which led to at least 23 deaths [3]. Congress held a hearing and grilled GM officials, which hurt GM’s public perception and tarnished their image. E-mails detailing [3] potential problems went public and got the automaker into deep trouble. GM recalled their vehicles after investigations uncovered the scandal, and involved 2.6 million GM vehicles.

It is the 69th recall for GM this year and covered 29 million vehicles worldwide. One other recall, this past May, involved 284,000 vehicles [4] due to a potential fire hazard.
