WASHINGTON — Germany’s foreign minister, on trip to Ukraine, visited opposition leaders instead of the current Ukrainian president.

german foreign ministerReuters reported that Guido Westerwelle snubbed President Viktor Yanukovich, whose political decisions sparked the current protests.

The protests erupted when Yanukovich decided to back out of a potential economic trade pact with the European Union, after Russia pressured him to back out. Russia indicated that it will pull gas and oil trade with their former Soviet republic. The EU condemned it as a political play by the Russian government.

Protesters want to strengthen ties with the EU instead of kowtow to Russia.

Georgia, another former Soviet republic, has decided to go ahead and forge stronger ties with the EU even with Russian pressure ramping up.
