WASHINGTON — Facebook has banned an advertiser from using its platform because it used the photograph of a dead teenager in a dating advertisement.
Reuters reported that a Facebook user noticed the photo used for an online dating website was that of Rehtaeh Parsons, a 17-year-old girl who committed suicide after online bullying.
The user took screenshots of the ad, put it on Twitter and the Twitterverse came down on Facebook for this ad campaign. In the words of a Facebook spokeswoman, “This is an extremely unfortunate example of an advertiser scraping an image from the Internet and using it in their ad campaign”.
The ad was removed as quickly as possible and the account of the advertiser was permanently deleted, and Facebook apologized “for any harm this has caused.”
