WASHINGTON — Apple and Facebook announced they will help pay for their female employees to freeze their eggs.
Reuters reported that this is a way for companies to spend more on their employees and benefits in Silicon Valley.
This is one way that these companies can pay for both full- and part-time employees up to $20,000 for the procedure and storage costs so workers can extend their careers and worry about having children later.
“We continue to expand our benefits for women, with a new extended maternity leave policy, along with cryopreservation and egg storage as part of our extensive support for infertility treatments…”
“We want to empower women at Apple to do the best work of their lives as they care for loved ones and raise their families.”
Facebook had started the benefits back in January.
Reuters said, “Egg freezing is a pricey but increasingly popular option for women. It enables women to delay child bearing. The procedure is also used by women who have to undergo medical treatments that interfere with fertility such as with cancer.”
The article also referred to these as a part of “new family-planning perks.”
The procedure apparently cost up to $10,000 and $500 for storage per year.
