WASHINGTON — Facebook and Twitter, the innovators of the social media world in the West and parts of the Middle East, has not been able to gain traction in the large, untapped market of China.

china cell phone usersReuters reported that their content is currently blocked by the Chinese Communist regime, and if they are eventually unblocked, they will face stiff competition from Chinese rivals that are better tuned into Chinese consumers’ tastes, wants and needs.

China has about 591 million Internet users and is the world’s biggest online population.

Facebook and Twitter are unblocked in China since 2009, but the filters will be lifted in the Shanghai Free Trade Zone this weekend. This move has been called the “Internet Concession”, but no one is sure whether these social media platforms will succeed.
