WASHINGTON — After months of negotiation, American Airlines and U.S. Airways have been approved to merge by the European Union.

airlines mergerReuters reports that the $11 billion merger will take place after the airlines promised to surrender slots at London’s Heathrow airport and at Philadelphia.

The EU investigated the merger to prevent a monopoly, but this offer by the airlines could not be refused.
