WASHINGTON — The European Union is trying to allay fears by Germany, the United Kingdom and France over a mass influx of Romanian and Bulgarian migrants.

EU immigrationReuters reported that the E.U. lifted a ban on Romanian and Bulgarian nationals from immigrating to other countries, which the larger and more prosperous countries have resisted for a time.

Europe, a hotbed of anti-immigrant sentiment, is worried that the mass influx of migrants could hurt their economies and tax their social welfare systems. The ban was lifted after seven years and now Romanians and Bulgarians can live and work anywhere in the economic bloc. They can do this without having to apply for work permits.
