WASHINGTON — A co-pilot hijacked an Ethiopian Airlines flight to seek asylum in Switzerland this past Monday.
Reuters reported  that the harrowing ordeal started when the pilot went to the bathroom and the co-pilot locked him out.
The co-pilot, Ethiopian national Hailemedhin Abera Tegegn, sent a coded message to signal he hijacked the aircraft. He was a veteran pilot of five years and had no criminal record.
Upon landing, he jumped out of the cockpit window and went down an emergency rope. He did not harm any passenger or crew member and surrendered to police.
The flight had 193 passengers on board.
