D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray kills Living Wage, anti-Wal-Mart bill

WASHINGTON — The Democratic mayor of the District of Columbia, Vincent Gray, vetoed the anti-major retailer bill [1] that would have been a “job killer”.

walmart store [2]Reuters reported [3] that the recent living wage drive, pushed by unions and low-wage workers, was not approved by Gray.

Wal-Mart, Target, Home Depot and other big retailers opposed the bill, which raised the minimum wage from $8.25 to the double digits. They contended it would kill their business models and may force them to reconsider building or operating in the District.

D.C. could not afford the passage of the bill, which was passed by the city council. It would have been the first living wage bill passed in a major city that targeted retailers.

Part of Mayor Gray’s statement read, “The bill is a job killer, because nearly every large retailer now considering opening a store in the District has indicated that they will not come here or expand here if this bill becomes law”.
