WASHINGTON — Ariel Castro, the Cleveland man who kidnapped three women and sexually assaulted them for years, was found dead in his jail cell.
Fox News reported that he apparently committed suicide in his cell by hanging himself.
He was found hanging in his cell at 9:20 pm local time, where CPR was administered. He was taken to the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio where he was pronounced dead at 10:52 pm. An investigation is underway, but it seems that between check-ins by guards every thirty minutes, Castro hung himself. He was not on suicide watch, which means there would have been constant surveillance.
Castro, 53, kidnapped Amanda Berry, Michelle Knight and Gina DeJesus when they were teenagers and held them for decades in his basement. They were only rescued when one of them beat down a door and screamed for help and Castro was arrested that night.
