WASHINGTON — With NASA out of the picture, China is sending manned flights into space. It seems that Russia and China now are spending billions to do so while Americans take a back seat.
Reuters reports that the spacecraft launched this past Tuesday and that it carried three Chinese astronauts, who were going on a 15-day mission to an experimental space lab to eventually develop a space station. It is significant because the team is composed of China’s first female astronaut along with two males.
While up in space, the astronauts will give a lecture to Chinese student on the earth’s surface.
NASA has bowed out of manned spaceflight, paying at least $70 million per astronaut to the Russians to provide transportation.
