WASHINGTON — The U.S. government has been accused of helping an American escape the country of Bolivia, which has cold relations with the U.S.
Reuters reported that American citizen and New York resident Jacob Ostreicher was accused by Bolivia of money laundering, to which the American State Department said there was flimsy evidence.
Ostreicher was imprisoned and put under house arrest over the past 18 months, and the U.S. State Department and liberal actor Sean Penn pleaded for his release. But, he was apparently snuck across the Bolivia-Peru border in what the Bolivian government called a clandestine operation.
The U.S. State Department denied such charges and allegations.
Evo Morales, the president of Bolivia, has railed against the U.S. government for years while his domestic policies have come under heavy criticism.
