WASHINGTON — Islamist militants have killed at least 85 Nigerian civilians in northeastern Nigeria, where the Islamist militant group Boko Haram is waging a war against Christians and the Nigerian government.

boko haramReuters reported that this is a major public relations blow for the country’s military campaign under President Goodluck Jonathan. Goodluck Jonathan is running for re-election next year in what could be a close race.

Late last month, a Nigerian provincial governor lamented that the Nigerian military is under-equipped and unmotivated compared to the Islamists, a claim the Nigerian military swept aside.

Two bombs blew up in the city of Maiduguri, killing at least 46 people last Saturday. Islamist gunmen gunned down civilians in a farming village about 30 miles away and killed 39 people.

Nigeria has fought back against the Islamist Boko Haram for a year, but has been able to keep them contained to remote rural areas.
