WASHINGTON — A major embarrassment has become even more so for the Obama administration as the Syrian government claimed it had won a victory over chemical weapons negotiations.

syria assad declares victoryReuters reported that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s government called the settlement a “victory”, which was negotiated by the Russian government.

This came after the Obama administration threatened military force over Syria’s use of chemical weapons, which was not confirmed for a while. Obama defended his backing down from Russia and Syria as a reasonable agreement.

Russia threatened the U.S. if it took action in Syria without Russian or international approval, saying it could arm Assad if the West took the side of the rebels.

The American people and Congress strongly opposed any American intervention in the Syrian civil war and Obama had to backtrack domestically and internationally as France and the British backed off their support.

The Syrian minister Ali Haidar called the agreement  a victory for Syria, achieved thanks to our Russian friends.”

It looks like Russia and Syria won this round, Obama.
