WASHINGTON — The 2014 Winter Olympics in the Black Sea resort city of Sochi, Russia are now underway, but American and European security officials are still worried of a possible terrorist attack.

sochi hammer and sickleReuters reported that intelligence officials believe terrorist attacks are likely to occur during the Olympics, but would probably be aimed at so-called “soft” targets like public transportation.

Security officials have received significant intelligence that several militant groups plan an attack during the Olympics and are taking each threat or thread of information seriously.

Before the U.S. House Intelligence Committee earlier this week, National Counterterrorism Center director Matthew Olsen said, “We think the … greater danger from a terrorist perspective is in potential for attacks to occur outside of the actual venues of the games themselves in the area surrounding Sochi or outside of Sochi in the region.”
