Afghanistan Swears In New Leader Amid Violence

WASHINGTON — Afghanistan has inaugurated their first new president, after Hamid Karzai’s latest term ended, while the Taliban has attacked Westerners and locals at an alarming rate.

afghan ghani [1]Reuters reported [2] that Ashraf Ghani was sworn in on Monday to head a power-sharing government, but it comes at a time when the West and NATO are pulling out their troops in the country.

The government was not formed for months after Ghani and his opponent, Abdullah Abdullah, both claimed victory in the recent election. Ghani agreed to become the president, but created the office of chief executive. Abdullah was sworn in as the office of chief executive soon after.
