ABC’s Jake Tapper reported today that Vice President Joe Biden had finally joined Twitter (@VP), where he will probably be gaffe free, unlike the Veep in real life.
Currently the account has attracted about 5,200 followers and isn’t following anyone, including the President. It will probably take some time to catch up with the @WhiteHouse (2.2 ,million followers) or @BarackObama (8.9 million followers), but then again Rome wasn’t built in day.
The only tweet from the account was issued this morning and was a very safe, patriotic one: “VP & Dr. B hope you take time to think about our troops & military families this Independence Day, Happy 4th from OVP! @JoiningForces”
Those looking for the Twitter account to mimic Biden, gaffes and all, will likely be disappointed. The tweets will be controlled by his staff to try and avoid the same type of embarrassment that some recent tweets have caused other politicians who were handling their own accounts.
The move, while long overdue, is very timely since the White House will be holding its first ever Twitter Town Hall on Wednesday. With Biden’s staff in charge of his tweets, they probably won’t be quite as interesting as if he was sending them himself.
Happy Independence Day!
