The State Department may have denounced the publication of classified cables by WikiLeaks but that didn’t stop them from promoting a documentary by infamous Vietnam era leaker Daniel Ellsberg.
Ellsberg leaked a top secret government report that he worked on to the New York Times which published excerpts in 1971 and waslater joined by The Washington Post and other papers is hailed in the film a whistleblower of conscience.
The film is one of 18 selected that will tour the world in the State Department’s “American Documentary Showcase’ program.
According to the programs website the Showcase is funded by a grant from the State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and curated and administered by Funded by a grant from the State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and curated and administered by the University Film and Video Association (UFVA). The purpose of the Showcase is to offer ” a view of American society and culture as seen by independent documentary filmmakers.”
Now if only the State Department can make up its mind if it is for or against the leaking of classified government documents.
Other films in the Showcase include If A Tree Falls: A Story of the Earth Liberation Front a radical environmentalist group and Freedom Riders on the civil rights movement.
