According to Paul Farhi of The Washington Post, a source who is familiar with the months-long investigation of former NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams told him that the network has found 11 instances in which Williams exaggerated the facts in his reporting.

The investigation was triggered after Williams apologized in February for repeatedly stating that his helicopter came under attack in 2003 while flying in Iraq—a claim that was questioned by soldiers who were present during the attack. The apology and investigation were in response to an interview with Williams about his war exploits that appeared in Stars and Stripes.

NBC executives, including NBC Universal CEO Steve Burke, new NBC News chairman Andrew Lack and NBC News president Deborah Turness were briefed last Thursday on the report’s findings, which could lead to a decision about Williams’ fate with the network before his suspension ends in August.

Williams’ suspension has hurt both the network’s reputation and the ratings of Nightly News, which fell to no. 2 in early April behind ABC’s World News Tonight for the first time in over 5 1/2 years. The two networks have been in a see-saw battle for the top spot ever since.
