Accuracy in Media

Is Dan Rather about to join the blogosphere? Blogger Dave Winer asked the former CBS News anchor if he would become a blogger. Alas we won’t be hearing the insights of “Mr. Memogate” as long as he is employed by CBS. You see CBS has some blogging rules that read as follows;

In this time of the exponential growth of blogs, there are CBS News employees who are creating and maintaining personal blogs. Before any such blog is created, the [Senior Vice President] of Standards must be informed and must approve the blog. For those of you who are already in the blogosphere, you must contact the SVP of Standards. There can be no messages or information posted on these blogs that is potentially damaging to CBS News if made public.

So much for freedom of the press.  Also why don’t they take this attitude towards what the network reports as news?

In the same short interview though Rather mused about leaving CBS and that would free him up to blog away.

I guess it’s only fitting that the internet which proved to be Dan’s downfall might possibly provide a forum to resurrect his credibility.

Maybe there will still be a need for our Rather Biased gear after all.
