In the video we can hear NPR’s Senior Director of Institutional Giving Betsy Liley discussing the possibility of making Ibrahim Kasaam’s proposed $5 miliion donation anonymous and safe from a government audit.
Kasaam: It sounds like you’re saying that NPR would be able to shield us from a government audit. Is that correct?
Liley: I think that is the case especially if you are anonymous and I can inquire about that.
Liley later confirmed in an email that NPR could keep the donation anonymous and that they don’t publish a list of gifts so that it wouldn’t be an issue.
As a 501(c)3 organization NPR isn’t required to publish a list of large donors but they are to reveal them on the non-public portion of their federal tax return so I’m not exactly sure how Liley planned to shield Kasaam’s donation from government scrutiny.
Liley has been placed on administrative leave pending further investigation.
