MSNBC Hardball host Chris Matthews while admitting his unwavering support for Obama took the president to task for his continued use of a teleprompter.
“I really support the President on a lot of his views, in fact all of them almost,” Matthews complained, “but I got to tell you something, Michael, if he doesn’t get rid of that damn Teleprompter, it’s like an eye test. He’s just reading words now. It’s separating him from us.”
“You got to a meeting with him I’m told, if businessmen are invited to meet him at the White House, he hauls out the damn Teleprompter and he reads to them. Well, why even bring people into the room? Just have the damn Teleprompter. I sense it’s getting between him and us. And I thought that speech last night was a terrible, well, a great example rather of him using the Teleprompter instead of his heart and his mind.”
I guess Matthews has been in denial not just for the last 20 plus months Obama has been in office but also during the time he campaigned for president, because the teleprompter has been like his mistress except that it has been in full public view. He’s addicted to it and can’t let go.
What Matthews is saying though is fraught with risks for Obama as virtually every time he has spoken without one loses that cool smooth speaking demeanor that he has when is “just reading words” as Matthews so succinctly put it.
For liberals like Matthews who were so “thrilled” when Obama was elected the teleprompter which was such an integral part of the Obama persona has now become an albatross around his neck and could be one of many reasons that the president will face a tough re-election in 2012.
