MSNBC, which devoted a large chunk of airtime to covering the George Zimmerman trial, got crushed Saturday night as the network finished a distant fourth place in the ratings, based on preliminary figures released today.

al sharpton msnbcDuring the 10-11 p.m. hour, when the verdict was released, Fox News had 3,682,000 total viewers, followed by CNN with 3,407,000, HLN at 2,203,000 and MSNBC with 1,298.000.

MSNBC also trailed badly in the key 25-54 demo, with just 510,000 viewers, compared to 1,716,000 on CNN, 1,113,000 on Fox and 980,000 on HLN.

MSNBC had devoted a lot of airtime to the trial, and the results were nowhere near what they had hoped for, which serves as a reminder—no matter what they do, when it comes to breaking news, viewers turn to what they believe are more credible sources.
