Continuing with his theme that Barack Obama isn’t far-left enough for his liking, liberal filmmaker Michael Moore revealed in a New York Times op-ed piece, what he called the liberals’ dirty little secret: Obamacare is awful. Moore blamed Obama for implementing a pro-insurance industry program, when a single-payer program would have been the better way to go:
I believe Obamacare’s rocky start — clueless planning, a lousy website, insurance companies raising rates, and the President’s telling people they could keep their coverage when, in fact, not all could — is a result of one fatal flaw: The Affordable Care Act is a pro-insurance-industry plan implemented by a President who knew in his heart that a single-payer, Medicare-for-all model was the true way to go. When right-wing critics ‘expose’ the fact that President Obama endorsed a single-payer system before 2004, they’re actually telling the truth.
Moore did say that, while the Affordable Care Act is a godsend for those who have pre-existing conditions and had been uninsured, for many people it wasn’t very affordable. He cited the cheapest plan for a 6o-year old couple in Hartford, making $65,000 per year: $11,800 with a $12,600 deductible.
That’s the ugly truth about Obamacare. While some people will benefit, thanks to federal tax credits and subsidies that will keep their premiums low, many more people are facing higher premiums and deductibles that are turning the cost of health care into an expense similar to their rent or mortgage payment. Plus, while enrollments are apparently picking up, they are lacking the key ingredient—the young invincibles—who have surprised officials with their willingness to pay a penalty rather than buy a plan they can’t afford or don’t want. Obama was counting on this group to sign up in droves to offset the higher cost of treating older insurees and keep the premiums down. But if that doesn’t happen, the program could implode from the higher premiums that will be necessary to treat an older insured group.
For the first time in my life I agree with Michael Moore—Obamacare is awful.
