“Meet the Press” Scores Big Ratings Win in Chuck Todd’s Debut

Chuck Todd got off to a fast start in his Meet the Press debut on NBC last Sunday, with the program winning both total viewers and the all-important 25-54 demo.

Todd was able to manage this rare feat for MTP, thanks to his interview with President Obama, who has been under fire for his lack of strategy in dealing with ISIS.

NBC was very happy with the results, though they realize it’s not likely to be repeated next week:

‘We couldn’t be more proud of Chuck’s first show and are so appreciative of the viewers that turned to ‘Meet the Press’ this Sunday,’ an NBC News spokesperson told  TV Newser. ‘At the same time, we know that one week does not equal a trend and expanding our regular audience will take a slow build week to week.’

MTP averaged 2.977 million total viewers, its largest audience since March 2, and 804,000 viewers in the demo. CBS’s Face the Nation came in a close second with 2.864 million total viewers and 768,000 in the demo. ABC’s This Week finished third with 2.559 million viewers and 763,000 in the demo.

These are the overnight flash numbers from Nielsen and could change when the official numbers are released on Thursday, but that shouldn’t affect MTP’s ratings enough to knock them from number one for the week.

With the addition of Joe Scarborough and Luke Russert to the program, MTP may be more interesting than the Gregory-hosted version, but is likely to retreat to its normal third-place slot for the foreseeable future.
