On The Five yesterday the panel discussed President Obama’s comments last week at the University of Maryland where he talked about the right-left media divide.
It turns out that Beckel isn’t a typical liberal as he doesn’t read the New York Times or watch MSNBC.
Beckel: President Obama said the media, blames the media for the divide going around the country. He said liberals only read the New York Times, conservatives only watch Fox. Mr . President I know you , I love you, I support you but I don’t read the New York Times. I’m a liberal and I’m on Fox. So I’m not the right guy to… I’m not sure that’s exactly right. I haven’t done a lot of polling here. There’s a lot of people who are Democrats that watch Fox.
This is akin to heresy for Beckel. Not only does he not read one of the nation’s leading daily newspapers or watch the leading liberal cable news network, he admitted that there are Democrats who actually watch Fox which doesn’t exactly jibe with president’s characterization of the conservative-liberal divide.
After some discussion of what Obama said about the media , Beckel then expressed his opinion about MSNBC competing against Fox:
“First of all, the President also ought to know, when he talks about that, I don’t know of six people that watch MSNBC. I don’t want to pick on a rival but they’re not a rival. They’re like a kindergartner playing baseball against the Yankees.”
That was probably an oversimplification of the differences between MSNBC and Fox but Beckel deserves credit for not trying to sugar coat the fact that MSNBC isn’t even in the same league when it comes to competing with Fox.
