Katie Couric, whose career has been in a downward spiral ever since she left the Today show, will try to revive her career by joining online web giant Yahoo! as their “global news anchor” in a deal announced today.

Katie CouricCouric, who was often referred to as “America’s Sweetheart” during her time at Today, has been anything but since she left the show for a fat contract to anchor the CBS Evening News.

That move, while lucrative for Couric, left a black mark on her record. The show struggled with perennially low ratings during her tenure, and led CBS News to decide not to renew her contract.

Since leaving CBS, Couric has been a special correspondent for ABC News and launched a syndicated daytime talk show on ABC called Katie, which is in its second year. But, according to industry insiders, the show is on the verge of cancellation.

Couric will begin her new program in 2014 and will focus on interviewing a range of high-profile celebrities, business executives and other newsmakers. It will be prominently featured on Yahoo’s main page.

That is quite a comedown for Couric—to go from network television with its millions of viewers, to the Internet, where videos with a million views are few and far between.

Maybe Yahoo thinks that Couric can replicate the success of Glenn Beck, who left Fox News and created his own online network, The Blaze. But the difference is that Beck has a large and enthusiastic fan base—thanks to his radio show and his frequent appearances around the country—that are willing to pay to view his content. That isn’t the case with Couric.

Couric was excited about the opportunity to try and salvage what’s left of her career:

I have great admiration for Marissa Mayer and her team and their commitment to bringing news, entertainment and information to the Yahoo community across multiple platforms.  Joining Yahoo offers a tremendous opportunity to reach people all around the world in the way that they’re using and consuming media today.

That may be, but I for one just don’t see how Couric will help raise Yahoo’s profile or profits.
