At a press conference Wednesday in Mexico City, President Vicente Fox called on the U.S. to tear down the border walls because they are “discriminatory” and “against freedom.” He also said building the wall doesn’t make any sense.

Let’s take another look. First the wall is really a corrugated metal fence that cars can’t get through. Then there is a wide road with a 16 foot chain link fence that takes so long to climb or cut through it is virtually impossible to go undetected by border patrol agents.

The results along the 10 miles of completed fence are startling. Arrests by the border patrol of illegal immigrants has dropped from 25,000 to 3,000 in the last three years. On top of that violent crime has decreased to near zero in the same period.

In an interview Fox said that border security was “as high a priority for us as it is for the United States.” He added that “Mexico has been very responsible in security matters.”

That’s quite a statement from a man whose own government published a comic book, The Guide for the Mexican Migrant which offers safety information for border crossers, a primer on their legal rights and advice on living undetected in the U.S.

The Mexican government has already acknowledged that they don’t have enough jobs for their own citizens and they see nothing wrong with them crossing into the U.S. to find jobs. After all, Mexican citizens sent nearly 17 billion dollars home last year alone.

Hopefully President Bush will not give in to Fox when they meet next week in Crawford, Texas. If you agree send the White House a message today to (JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)
