White House Press Secretary Jay Carney has been receiving more criticism lately for his attempts to defend the Obama administration from a string of scandals. But it’s not entirely his fault, since he warned us in 2006 that he probably wouldn’t be a good choice for the position:
The best press secretaries were very deft at serving both their boss, the President (the White House, the administration), and the press. And not… it’s a tricky job and I’m sure I wouldn’t be very good at it [emphasis added] … and not servicing either side and not embarrassing themselves. Not having to go the president saying “oh my god, I screwed up” frequently, and not, you know, making themselves look like they’re just spinning and not conveying any information in front of the press.
