Accuracy in Media

House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) gave conservative bloggers a short briefing yesterday at the Heritage Foundation but did little to instill confidence that the Republicans will be able to recapture the House in 2008.

Boehner focused mainly on earmarks and his efforts to bring what he called more transparency and sunlight to the process.  To achieve this he is sponsoring a discharge petition that would allow earmarks to be publicly disclosed and to be challenged on the House floor.  He will need 218 votes and holding 202 Republicans plus getting the support of 16 Democrats to bust the pork won’t be easy.

While it sounds like the GOP is actually trying to become more fiscally responsible the dirty little secret on the hill is that when it comes down to actually voting to eliminate earmarks on the floor that the Republicans abandon ship and nothing changes.  They can rail against the earmarks in public because they know full well that the votes on these measures rarely get reported so they can have their cake and eat it to.

If the GOP keeps up this type of behavior they stand a better chance of sinking into the abyss than regaining the power they lost in 2006.
