One of the highlights last week of the Democrats taking control of Congress was how they handled the appearance of anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan
Last Wednesday when House Democratic leaders tried to hold a press conference to discuss their legislative priorities in the new congress , Sheehan led a group of hecklers shouting “De-escalate, investigate, troops home now,” persisting long enough that Rep. Rahm Emanuel (D-IL) to end the conference.
Then on Thursday, Sheehan repeated her performance forcing Rep. Louise Slaughter to delay her press conference 45 minutes.
Liberal Democrats who loudly applauded Sheehan during the last couple of years and credited her for helping them win control of both the House and Senate last year now don’t know what to do with her.
Sheehan’s actions seem to have caught the Democrats off guard though a check of her website clearly mentions that her group Gold Star Families for Peace was holding a “Walk for Change” on January 3rd and 4th where they would let the 110th congress know what is expected of them from Day 1. They badly miscalculated if they thought Sheehan’s target would be limited to the GOP and wound up with a public relations disaster even before they were sworn into office.
Thanks to Sheehan and other miscues the Democrats have gotten off to a wobbly start and the fissures within the party have exposed the challenges they will face over the next two years as they try and tighten their grip.
Maybe they should have watched what they prayed for.
