Former CBS Evening News anchor Dan Rather, who knows a thing or two about what it feels like to get fired, appeared on CNN’s Reliable Sources on Sunday to talk about Brian Williams’ future at NBC News. He told host Brian Stelter that he thought Williams was done.
“Objectively it’s very hard to see how NBC brings him back,” Rather said. I said some time ago that I thought his chances were slim to none, and you can make a case that slim just left town, considering the recent leaks to The Washington Post and The New York Times, which were really vicious in their own way.
NBC News’ report on the investigation of Williams’ fabrications isn’t expected to be released for several weeks, but according to the Post and Times, it documents 11 instances in which Williams embellished his reporting—including the now infamous chopper attack. The information in this report may give the network cause to fire Williams.
Williams is serving a six-month suspension, but depending on the timing of the release of the report he could be gone from NBC before the six months are up.
