David Gregory

David Gregory may be on borrowed time as the host of NBC’s Meet the Press, but according to The New York Post’s Page Six, he may already be angling for a job at CNN.

Gregory was spotted at the CNN building on Thursday afternoon, generating rumors about what he plans to do if he is fired by NBC.

If Gregory does join CNN, he will be reunited with former NBC president and CEO Jeff Zucker, who is now the president of CNN Worldwide and has been trying to rejuvenate the former cable news champion. From the Post:

‘No one was surprised to hear David was meeting over at CNN,’ a network-news insider said after word spread that Gregory was spotted at the rival news network. ‘Jeff and David have been very close professionally and personally. Jeff was a champion of David’s during his time at NBC. Their families are close. They have a very strong relationship that dates back to the 1990s.’ Before rising to CEO, Zucker had been producer of ’Today’ when Gregory was hired at the network.

If Zucker is really interested in making CNN relevant and competitive again, then he should be hiring bona fide stars or future stars, not someone like Gregory who has driven Meet the Press’ ratings into the ground since taking over for the late Tim Russert.

It’s only a matter of time before NBC dumps Gregory. If Zucker is smart, he’ll resist the temptation to hire him and do any further damage to CNN’s already miserable ratings.
