CNN Films Hires “Inconvenient Truth” Producer for Hillary Film

CNN Films, the division of CNN Worldwide responsible for commissioning the upcoming documentary about Hillary Clinton, has hired Courtney Sexton, the producer of Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth, as senior director, according to Deadline [1].

The as yet unnamed film has generated plenty of controversy, with the Republican National Committee voting last week to bar CNN from hosting Republican presidential primary debates in 2016. That doesn’t appear to bother CNN Films at the moment:

“We’re thrilled to have a film executive with Courtney’s experience and talent join CNN Films,” said Sexton’s new boss, Vinnie Malhotra, senior vice president of development and acquisitions for CNN Worldwide. “Her extensive background in story crafting, and her ability to build strong relationships with filmmakers, will be a major asset to us as we take CNN Films forward.”

Republicans had a different take, with RNC communications director Sean Spicer telling Politico in an email that “Any concerns the Clinton team had are all gone. This puts the ‘p’ in puff piece,” adding, “What’s next, Michael Moore directing?”

Moore won’t be directing, but Charles Ferguson will. Ferguson is the founder and president of Representational Pictures who produced and directed No End in Sight: The American Occupation of Iraq. The team of Ferguson and Sexton should ensure that the Hillary film will be a glorification of a deeply flawed individual as she prepares for another run at the presidency.
