Accuracy in Media

The Chicago Tribune decided not to run the Doonesbury comic strip this week after editor Gerould W. Kern determined that it didn’t meet the paper’s “standard of fairness.”

This week we are not publishing “Doonesbury” comic strips because they do not meet our standards of fairness. We are substituting another strip instead.

The “Doonesbury” strips refer to allegations purportedly contained in an as-yet-unreleased book about former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. The book is not yet available for verification or review by the Chicago Tribune.

Liberals are up in arms over the Tribune’s “censorship,” but the paper deserves credit for not publishing the strip based on unfounded accusations from Palin critic Joe McGinniss in his new book, which is due out next week. Too bad more papers didn’t follow suit.
