During an appearance on CNN’s Reliable Sources last Sunday, CBS News senior White House correspondent Bill Plante told host Howard Kurtz that the Obama administration is bordering on “state run media.”
Kurtz asked Plante whether the White House press corps was being too whiny over being denied access during Obama’s recent golf outing with Tiger Woods:
Here’s the nub of it, Howie. This administration has the tools to reach people on their own. They don’t need us as much. And to the extent that they are able to do that they are undercutting the First Amendment, which guarantees a free press through many voices. If they put out their own material, it’s state run media.
Plante is right. Now that Obama has won reelection, the White House press corps is not as important to his political strategy as it had been in the past. As a result, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the White House become even more Pravda-like in the future.
