Accuracy in Media

Last week the struggling liberal talk show network Air America declared bankruptcy in an effort to remain on the air. With assets of $4.3 million and liabilities of $20.3 million they have dug themselves quite a hole and even this bankruptcy reorganization attempt may fail.

But never fear, the co-founders of Air America, Sheldon and Anita Drobny along with Dr. Mike Newcomb have announced the formation of the Nova M Radio Network. The interesting thing about the press release though is that though they are touting this as a network there is no mention of the number of affiliates, just a reference to the fact that their programming will be available to affiliates as well as being streamed on their website.

The first program to launch will be Mike Malloy who the release referred to as America’s original “truth seeker” whose program will air from 9PM-12 Midnight (EST) beginning October 30th. Also joining Malloy will be pollster John Zogby, Mike “Doc” Newcomb and Peter B. Collins. With the exception of Zogby how many people have heard of these other guys?

In their press release Nova M CEO & Chairman Mike Newcomb said “We will continue to build upon the foundation laid by our predecessors and will work tirelessly to fulfill our fiduciary responsibilities to our investors. Equally important, we will with the millions of faithful progressive listeners uphold our vision to promote freedom, social justice, economic justice and peace worldwide.” Gag me please.

From my perspective touting a show that will air at 9PM isn’t what I would call a ratings winner. This isn’t like television where it would be prime time. It’s mostly dead time. And exactly what foundation did the predecessors lay? Bankruptcy? And how many millions of listeners are there? Air America had 4 million listeners. I think the third highest rated talk radio program in the country Glenn Beck has 14 million listeners and Rush has about 20 million. Plus I love how they refer to it as progressive radio. If you have ever listened to a program on Air America, it’s not progressive it’s left wing. They can’t even be honest enough to label it accurately.

Left wing radio has a very limited appeal and if the Drobny’s want to throw their money away that’s perfectly fine with me. Less money in liberal hands is a good thing.
