Accuracy in Media

NowThis News criticized the Trump administration for allegedly politicizing the global coronavirus pandemic, but it did not criticize the World Health Organization for its role in the virus’s spread or for its consistent praise of the Chinese government.

The website quoted WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus’ threat to the United States, when he said, “Please don’t politicize the virus. If you don’t want many more body bags, then you refrain from politicizing it.”

Instead of delving into Ghebreyesus’ past, which includes covering up multiple cholera outbreaks in Ethiopia, NowThis News defended the WHO chief and his organization. It pointed out that President Donald Trump called the WHO too “China-centric” and suggested that the United States should withhold its WHO funding. To its credit, the website also cited other WHO critics in addition to Trump.

Yet there was not a single mention or reference to WHO’s past praise of China. As Accuracy in Media reported, the WHO has consistently praised China for its strict coronavirus response in shutting down travel in parts of the country and imposing strict measures on its citizens. The WHO has not criticized China, nor has it recognized China’s initial cover-up of the coronavirus outbreak.
